In the past, and often times in the present, many ads have used racism as a way of getting their point across. By using these controversial ways of proving a point, it really showcases and encourages the idea that being White is much better than being Black. Below is an example:
The above advertisement is for white paint; its showing how the paint is so effective in covering up dark colors that it can cover Blacks in general. This ad sparked a lot of controversy as it basically encourages the idea that White is good and Black is bad; how Black people should try and look more like White people. Since this ad is from an earlier time period, racist thoughts are bound to be part of the society's way of thinking. However, this definitely showcases one of the many outcomes of the post-colonial theory.

I can see how this could have played a small part on the modern idea of plastic surgery and make-up used to make everbody look like the ideal human, a Caucasian. And yes, though this ad is quite old, many ideas of black is ugly, white is pretty still remain in our society. Nice job, Kitty! (:
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent photo displaying post-colonialism. Although, I still cannot believe that an ad like this was allowed to be publicized. It is so extremely racist and unnecessary that I feel like someone made it for a joke. However, very well written Kitty :D
ReplyDeleteYour definition of post-colonialism is very well written! This advertisement is a very powerful example of post-colonialism. It is sad to see that a paint company had to use racism in order to promote their products. Although less obvious, there are still advertisements these days that have the same idea that white is better than black.
